Latrine Usage

Latrine Use
  1. Hands should be washed before and after latrine use.
  2. Close seat lids after use - helps to keep the odor contained.
  3. Do not dispose of anything other than human waste and toilet paper in the pit.
  4. Lock doors after use to keep out insects and animals.
  5. Dispose of sanitary napkins and tampons in garbage or appropriate container. This container should be emptied on a daily basis.
  6. Check hand washing station refill if necessary.

Cleaning of the Latrines - For the safety of all concerned, latrines should be cleaned by an adult. Equipment needed:
  • Disposable latex or plastic gloves
  • Clorox solution: 1 1/2 cups bleach to 1 gal. water
  • Spray bottle for Clorox solution (clearly marked)
  • Paper towels, broom, trash bags

Tips for easy latrine cleaning:
  1. Gloves must be worn.
  2. Sweep floor and place any tissue, paper and debris in trash.
  3. Spray Clorox solution on seat, lid and base of latrine. Wipe clean with paper towels.
  4. Dispose of used paper towels and gloves in trash.
  5. Wash hands thoroughly.

Help girls to understand the importance of not playing games on others while they are in the latrine. For example, locking the door or peeking in or under the door. Illness can result from not eliminating body wastes, so treat the latrine and others with respect. Remember the girls will follow your lead, a positive attitude towards latrine use will go a long way.
